I recent binged the entire Mad Men series for the second time (and will do it again and again).

It is perfection.

In an episode (no spoilers), there was a scene where after an emotional confession a woman was told to say three Hail Mary’s (and something else that I can’t remember).

As I watched, it was so absurd and heart breaking because typical of religious prescriptions it was a useless exercise that ultimately is meaningless to God.

This poor woman believed (hoped and trusted) that it was genuinely going to be the difference between God forgiving her or not.

We’ve been taught (better to say trained) that ‘checking in’ is good enough.

Wearing crosses around our necks and stopping by church once or twice a year is all that’s needed (and a few Hail Marys) along the way to salvation.

I’m sorry to tell you that it’s all bullshit and makes no difference whatsoever. No, really…

Pastors, Priests and Rabbis are the real ‘Mad Men’!

Assigned by God to make a difference, not to idly perform rituals and pathetically pad the tithe.

They should be shouting about God so loudly that you couldn’t hear anything else above the cacophony!

After all, that’s their job!

And mine…

I am a Mad Man…for God!

And proud of it…

We, meaning all of us, must make a difference!

Don Draper said ‘love’ was invented by guys like him to sell more pantyhose.

Jesus said LOVE was created by God to sell nothing at all, but to bring us closer to each other and God.

That’s my kind of madness…sign me up.
