Martin Luther uttered the edict “Sola Fide” in the 16th century in response to corruption in the church by individuals taking bribes for false promises of salvation. It was also a response to theology that adhered to earthly constructs instead of genuine connection to God, such were the times.
For millennia man was taught that participation was enough to gain Gods favor on Earth and ultimately salvation. Luther challenged that idea based on two things: empirical evidence and sound reasoning.
The evidence clearly suggested that man was no better by being a Christian in name only. Man still suffered, yet there were individuals that transcended, exposing an imbalance.
Pious people weren’t necessarily closer to God, yet some impious individuals were.
What is the disparity?
God clearly favors some over others, but is it His whim or something else?
Reasoning concluded it is Faith.
Not intellectual faith, nor earthly loyalty to the church and church authority, but an inward Faith; more importantly, and to state it definitively, genuine Faith; and for those supremely connected, unquestioned and unwavering Faith, Sola Fide.
Faith is a gradient that develops inwardly on an individual basis, with no timeframe; some fast track, whilst others ebb and flow and still others never gain it.
Is it better to be a Protestant versus a Catholic?
Sola Fide may be the Protestant mantra, but it’s just as much so for the Catholics, if not explicitly stated, because both paths lead to God and Faith. They differ by means, not by goals.
In practice, see your soul as the living entity that it is. It must be cared for, nurtured, protected, interacted with, and connected to God.
Sola Fide is state of being, not a declaration, nor is it acquired by any authority claiming to give it to you, regardless of religion you practice.
Don’t end up a phony, being fooled by easy off-the-shelf religious practices, be the real deal.
Peace and God’s blessings…
