The (only) Way

Jesus said he was ‘The Way’ to God, as only the son can know the father and the father know the son. His teachings, formed into his prescribed way of living, would guarantee a place at God’s table. Belief in the son is the same as belief in the father, God. These are bold claims, even today. We do not take this lightly as Christian’s, whilst others dismiss it altogether as nonsense. When questioned, Jesus was committed. I am the son. He is the father. We are one and the same. Hence, whatever you do to me, with me, for me, against me, counts as having been done directly to God.

I waver on this, because although I get the logic, it is if and only if, you accept the foundational premise of Jesus as either the son of God or God himself, but it’s still not clear if this is so. There are logical inconsistencies and logistical practices that are counter to achieving the goal of connectivity to God. Whether Jesus is God or not, your goal is God, not a human being or a likeness with God-like attributes. My issue is not with reality, but the problems with translating that knowledge into genuineness within each individual.

‘I am the Son of God’ is not ‘I am God’. The son is of the father, but not the father. Now this could be linguistics gymnastics meant to deceive and confuse as was his way with teaching; keep them guessing until the true believers figure it out, ok, but it could have easily been stated clearly too, hence avoiding the two thousand years of debate. Reality is reality and not up for interpretation. We are past that way of thinking, besides it serves no purpose for modern humans. We should be accepting spiritual truths as we accept scientific ones. As always, the confusion is born of confusing language.

Jesus may actually be an obstacle, and not The Way, as he removed the responsibility of an individuals progress and placed it on himself and the church, perhaps actually, but definitely in your head. Jesus saved our souls, already, done, in the books. Don’t look to God look to Jesus, could be the equivalent of meeting with the first officer and not the captain of the ship. Jesus claimed to take the full measure of sin onto himself and hence we will all be beneficiaries until the end of time. But there’s a catch as you still must maintain the life lived according to his prescription. So, did he take away sin or not? Am I good or not really?

The New Testament is a rich human achievement unmatched only by its predecessor the Old Testament. Both are required and exist in conjunction as a single commitment to a spiritual path that ‘can lead to God’, not ‘guarantee to lead to God’.  The point I’m making is only the individual can achieve connection, that is growth and enlightenment with God. Jesus said, he is ‘The Way’ not the final destination. He is the guide to the final place of fullness.

Humans are the obstacle as teachers and students. Crappy teachers yield crappy students with misinformation. The proof speaks for itself. After two thousand years we should be basking in the light of our true understandings; savoring human knowledge coupled with spiritual knowledge. We all know that the former has won, and the latter is waning, despite the temporary upticks we see in interest that will surely dwindle as the excitement wears off; as people go from ‘The Chosen’ to ‘The Bored’.

Every moment is an appeal to stay vigilant in your search for and eventual connection to God. Tethering to Jesus can only go so far. You must trust yourself and seek God directly. That is ‘The Only Way’.
