I recently published my first book titled “222: The Sermons” under my pen name A.R. Perez, which is a take on my artists name that I’ve used for decades now, Artist Robert Perez™. I made up the name because I discovered in NYC when I was trying to open a dry cleaning account that as I tried to use my “name” it was already in the system for over a hundred people. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I was physically faint like, no joke. For the first time in my life I wasn’t “me,” and it really fucked me up. I was part of a generic pool of imposters who stole my identity (this was before the birth of the public internet as we know it). I was Robert Perez “number blah blah blah who gives a shit.”

Professionally, it was a new problem, especially when the internet became live and I built my first website (that was a task, no software to assist in the nineties). I had to quickly seize a unique identity to ensure there’d be only me when referenced. I came up with the obvious, Artist Robert Perez™. It sounded stupid, but it was accurate. It didn’t take long before I was naturally referring to myself as such. It’s now my brand name, so good for me, an accidental score. Now I’m Artist Robert Perez™, A.R. Perez and Pastor Perez; multiple personalities vying for attention. Not easy to juggle when I want to be considered a whole because all my endeavors are tied together as one, but a good problem to have, I suppose.

Over the almost 10 years I’ve been a pastor I wrote 222 sermons, hence the name, but with so many written they lacked a necessary cohesion. So, I published them into a single first volume that is a collection of my first 9 years of sermons.

I realized when I was editing them into a book that by being written in succession there were a couple of bonus befits. The collection follows the development of my philosophies and theology, from early ecstatic Catholic religion to cynicism onto solid open ended yet grounded spiritual understandings; still Christian based but with the added development of a mixture of philosophy, thorough theological editing and lay scientific grounding. Readers get to not only take the journey of development, but there is a hidden benefit of progressive reasoning that in theory should lead the reader to a layered understanding, with each sermon building upon the previous ones, leading to what was always the overall goal, a genuine rock solid understanding of God and how Christianity is one of the best ways to achieve the end result, a genuine connection to God that is irrefutable and unshakable.

I’ve wavered on writing regular sermons while editing and publishing books that have been in development for years. Also, I was near fatally ill for a few years, which was the most important hurtle to overcome; I’m not in the clear at all, but I’m crawling to a place of “normalcy.” God and family have sustained me for a while longer.

Traditionally, Pastors and Priests do their teaching on Sundays. The consistency gives those willing to listen a way of knowing when to acquire some wisdom and for the presenters a week between to prepare. It makes sense. I wrote sporadically as I had time or was moved to. I sincerely tried to be consistent, but something always derailed me or I’d write in bursts for a time, followed by gaps. With my first collection assembled, it’s time for the next decade or so. I’ll be attempting to follow the established traditional worldwide schedule of a sermon every Sunday. This gives me the week to write more extensively instead of quick fire blurbs. It also gives those who care the ability to know when a new sermon is coming, hopefully looking forward to it.

When I became a Pastor I knew from the beginning that mine would be a “Churchless Church.” A non-physical place available to people all over the world. And although still small, I have readers all over the globe on every continent. God called me for one mission and my whole life has been preparation and development for this single task, including my art, poetry etc., i.e. to get people to first see God, then to connect with God. That’s it. If I do that, it’s mission complete.
